OTDR is a precision optical measuring instrument of Rayleigh scattering and Finel reflection transmission in fiber produced by laser backscatter principle is made, it is widely used in optical fiber, optical cable installation, maintenance and repair, monitoring applications. It can be used to measure the length, attenuation, quality and fault location of fiber optic cable.

    After installation of fiber cables, we need to perform the measurements, and record the fiber length, span loss, connector loss, connector position, etc. In verification test we use OTDR most commonly. It emits light with some certain pulse width into the fiber under test, detects the power distribution of optical signal on basis of Rayleigh scattering and Fresnel reflection along the time axis, and then draw the OTDR trace, so as to acquire the parameters like connector loss, fiber loss, and find the fault position, as well as to get clear of the loss distribution along the fiber link.

Use of a launch cable assures the user that front end connector of the network will be accurately measured.If the launch cable is to short,the fornt end connector will be consumed in the deadzone.Likewise,a receive cable assures the technician that the far end connector is not broken and the span has continuity.

    Connect the OTDR to a launch(Suppression/reference) cable,The secondary end of the launch cable will be connected to an access panel at one end of the fiber optic span under test,Optionally,a receive cable can be attached at the far end.
